Working together.

Every renovation project comes with surprises, and overcoming obstacles is simply part of the process.

Sometimes it’s hidden plumbing. Sometimes it’s decades-old wiring behind a wall. And sometimes, it’s several inches of water where there definitely shouldn’t be several inches of water.

Recently, on one of our multifamily renovation projects, what started as a normal workday quickly turned into an all-hands-on-deck situation when a fire sprinkler pipe unexpectedly broke, resulting in 6,000 gallons of water flooding a vacant unit.

Within moments, the calm sounds of drills and hammering were replaced with the unmistakable scramble of people locating shutoffs, moving materials, and figuring out how to stop the problem before it got any worse. Our superintendents quickly coordinated the next steps in real time to stop the leak and assess the damage.

Not exactly the kind of excitement anyone orders with their morning coffee.

What happened next reminded us why teamwork matters so much in construction, especially when we need to overcome an obstacle. There wasn’t finger-pointing. There wasn’t panic. There wasn’t a long debate about whose responsibility it was.

Instead, every trade jumped in to help, no questions asked.

Our onsite team of plumbers, electricians, HVAC, flooring crew, and countertop installers immediately got to work. Through strong communication, they worked together almost seamlessly to grab vacuums, carry away wet carpets, shovel up debris, and dry the affected areas.

Everyone brought solutions to the table. Within a short amount of time, a situation that could have completely derailed progress was under control, and a clear recovery plan was already in motion.

That’s the reality of renovation work. Existing buildings don’t always reveal their secrets on schedule. Surprises happen. Conditions change. The unexpected becomes the expected.

What defines a successful project isn’t whether obstacles will arise. It’s how the team responds when they do.

Unit after construction crews worked together during an emergency cleanup

There’s something uniquely human about watching a group of skilled professionals drop everything and work together to solve a problem.

In the middle of soaked flooring, wet boots, and industrial fans humming at full speed, there was quick thinking, teamwork, and a shared determination to get things back on track.

And we did. Not because the situation was easy, but because the team was ready.

THE WILSHIRE WAY

We carry that same mindset through every renovation project we take on: respond quickly, communicate clearly, and put the best plan in place to overcome any obstacle and keep moving forward.

Sometimes that means rebuilding a unit. Sometimes that means rebuilding a schedule. And sometimes it means discovering that a flooded apartment can unexpectedly become one of the best reminders of what a strong team looks like.

Thankfully, this story ended with dry floors, a recovered timeline, and one very memorable jobsite story we’ll probably be talking about for years to come.
